Richard Branson is an English business man who founded the Virgin Group, which controls over 400 companies. This Group was founded in 1970 and is a leading international investment group, and one of the most respected and recognized worldwide.  It has created employment for over 50, 000 employees, operates in over 50 countries, and earns revenues of over 25 billion dollars annually. There are certain personal traits that have greatly aided in his rise to success: creativity, anti-establishment, opportunistic, competitive, hard negotiator, and workaholic. Furthermore, based on the theories of leadership, there are various entrepreneurial styles employed by Richard that further elevated majority of his business ventures.

Firstly, he fostered a good relationship with his employees and created a proper working environment by welcoming new ideas and feedback from them. In addition to that, he also invited or threw parties for his junior staff members in a bid to motivate them, encourage loyalty, and reduce employee turnover. The task structure of his organization is low and with no established procedures thus giving them the initiative and freedom of being creative. The Virgin Group is generally working towards a non-hierarchical and flat based composition; meaning that it is based on clusters and flexibility to function independently with minimal interference. Based on the Contingency theory of Fielder, it is evident that Richard Branson can be categorized under the intermediate type of leaders, who are socio-independent, and task motivated. Consequently, he proves participative in nature, democratic, and a dominant thinker.

Secondly, he posses situational leadership skills and strong contingency that enables him to utilize available opportunities in establishing new companies. He is highly capable of controlling various business related circumstances, especially in terms of risk taking. Branson tends to apply various techniques depending on the context and situation, hence depicting an essential dominant theory of leadership: situational phenomenon. Furthermore, he tends to implement adjustments at a fast rate compared to his fellow counterparts. An excellent example is when Virgin Cola in the United States changed its strategy, management, and location of its t-drinks business with emphasis on the theme “New Age beverages like fruit juices and energy drinks, when he saw no prospect in the war against the Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola in the Cola Business (Branson & McLimore, 2013).

Furthermore, the workers feel more accomplished and appreciated. Their effort results in the increment in the rate of annual profits and revenue the organization receives. Nevertheless, this approach cannot be deemed efficient in certain organizational settings, especially in small-scale businesses due to the lack of varying or different areas of work.
