Leadership Philosophy Sample Paper


Purpose of paper:

To allow you the opportunity to,

  • Demonstrate your written communications skills by creating a formal, written paper;
  • Demonstrate your ability and willingness to follow written instructions that require specific attention to detail and organizational guidelines (APA format);
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on your personal beliefs and philosophy of what characteristics, knowledge, and skills are critical to be an effective organizational leader.


Please follow the stated requirements for this paper.

Step 1: Read one leadership book for the semester course book list and any other course content or articles provided in the Resources folders of this Oncourse site.

Since this course only requires 1-2 reading assignments, student may also draw from textbooks, other books, outside readings or websites to support their personal philosophy of leadership outlined in this paper. Students will become familiar with the various types of leadership styles, behaviors, and skill sets that leadership styles from each other in their 200-level courses, class discussions, and the outside readings. All sources of leadership perspectives used in your paper must be cited via APA format. This includes class lectures, books, textbooks, or other sources used to create a concise paper that reflects your current philosophy about what it take to be an effective leader today. A link to the Purdue Online Writing Lab is in the Oncourse site for this class. The outside leadership book MUST be used as one of the sources for this paper.


Step 2: Write and submit a rough draft of your Leadership Philosophy Paper

  • Using a computer, create a typed concise MS Word document of 1-2 pages in length plus required APA format cover page and reference page.
  • Proofread your document. Either a peer or a mentor at one of the three campus writing centers can review your paper to ensure that it does not contain any spelling or grammatical errors and meets APA format requirements. Students who use the writing center will earn extra credit for this course.
  • Use 11-12 point Times New Roman type, 1” margins, double spacing, and all other components of APA format.
  • Use at least two (2) sources.Please use textbooks, the leadership book you selected to read for Panel Discussions, or other leadership writing to support your leadership philosophy (drop some names – it is good to begin to be able to talk about your major and who informs perspectives on leadership). Reference all sources in-text (body of paper) and formally (References page) using APA style.
  • From the two sources above (textbook and your outside leadership book selection), use a minimum of four (4) in-text references. Integrate the sourced content (paraphrase or capture the essence of the writer’s thoughts). Avoid using quotations.

Step 3: After receiving feedback on rough drafts, students must revise and upload a summary or abstract of their Leadership Philosophy to their Leadership Development Portfolio (for Portfolio Check 4 and the Final Leadership Development Portfolio due at the end of the semester).

Step 4: If your original grade is not acceptable, revise as indicated in the assignment feedback area of Canvas and resubmit for a re-grade within 10 days of receiving feedback.

This paper is not a research paper. You don’t have to use the book. However, I do need at least three sources. In this essay I must discuss my leadership style. Leadership Philosophy

Leadership refers to the act of directing an institution and a group of people. However, its meaning varies from person to person around the globe and is based on different things and situations i.e. religion, politics, and campaigns (Williams, 2006). My idea of leadership involves an individual who maps out direction, is dynamic, motivates and builds an inspiring vision in order to develop something new through the proper management of a group of people within an organization. This paper will generally highlight my personal beliefs and philosophies in regards to the knowledge, skills, and characteristics required to be an effective organizational leader.

My ideal and preferred form of leadership style is definitely the “transformational leadership” model that was first proposed by James MacGregor Burns and later developed by Bernard Bass (NorthHouse, 2012). This model lays more emphasis on visionary thinking and the creation of change without the utilization of the managerial procedures; whose blueprint is based on the maintenance and steady improvement of the current performance level. This model tends to possess more empowered and committed followers since there is the constant setting of more challenging expectations that motivate them to achieve higher than the established objectives.

As a leader, I intend to challenge the already established structures, operations, and current processes that define the usual form of leadership and purpose to engage, motivate and direct my followers in achieving a common vision; change-oriented. Leadership is not simply about specific principles and the making of popular decisions but is a complex phenomenon that requires courage in order to make the right choices for there to be a positive and lasting impact (Alatawi, 2009). To accomplish this, there is the need to possess certain characteristics and skills; they are contingent on organizational structure. The following are essential core characteristics and skills that are fundamental in guaranteeing institutional success.

Firstly, there is hard work and dedication that is especially important in ensuring the proper understanding of one’s employees and hence in the provision of direction and motivation to achieve the desired objectives. In business, leaders tend to experience numerous challenges and failures thus the need to possess dedication in order to constantly forge forward despite undergoing numerous losses. This involves re-evaluating one’s master plan and altering the intended direction in relation to the circumstance. Secondly, there is the ability to interact with the peers, superiors, and subordinates in a respectful manner. This is a fundamental requirement that is usually hard to accomplish particularly for leaders in regards to one’s employees. As a leader, it is paramount to be open-minded and willing to solicit feedback and advice from others before making fundamental decisions in relation to the organization. In addition to that, one ought to be willing to apologize when he/she offends the individuals working under them and accept corrections in a positive manner. Continuous learning, growth, and development are other critical values to possess since they involve the constant pursuit of opportunities for acquiring more knowledge in order to promote institutional progress (Alatawi, 2009).  This is essential considering the fact that the world is constantly evolving due to technology and thus generating more room for improvement; adaptation and innovation. Other important behaviors and skills include: execute and deliver, passion, motivating and inspiring, and team building.

My leadership philosophy has been shaped by the numerous life experiences that I have undergone and the authoritative figures in my life. A person’s ability to lead is deeply rooted in their understanding of oneself and their core values; self-mastery and discovery. Who we are as leaders are greatly defined by the manner in which we utilize our life encounters and convert them into actions aimed at assisting others to navigate through various obstacles.
